Alter egos: Superheroes, anyone?

My favourite character is Nancy Drew because she solves mysteries which no one else can, and on top of that she is just a teenager. She is friendly and a very determined girl — she sticks to her decision. Being a detective she is clever enough to never to reveal her identity while she is following impostors. That’s why I like the character of Nancy Drew very much.

— Keepa Shrestha

My favourite superhero is Spiderman. The similarities between him and me are — I love helping others and saving other’s lives just like Spiderman. He is as helpful as me. Spiderman is very handsome and so am I. He is strong but he does not torture others, I am also strong but do not torment others. One amazing fact is that Spiderman’s height and my height are exactly the same. Spiderman received his special power one night, and the same thing happened to me. Something came into my room and gave me some powers. Earlier I was dull, but after that night I have changed. Spiderman loves wearing fancy clothes and so do I. Spiderman loves spider and so do I.

— Rishabh Neupane, Bhaktpur

I think that the character of Heidi resembles me because she is fearless in the face of trouble. Being a girl and going to live in Alps, which is such a freezing place, she did not refuse to live there with her grandfather at such a young age. It shows that she thinks for others and not only for herself.

— Sophiya Maharjan

The character I resemble most is Irene from Mallory Towers written by Enid Blyton. I like her because at times I can be completely absent-minded like her and searching for something that I’m holding in my hands. Like her I can be totally funny at times and do crazy things.

— Sadichchha Pokharel

My favourite character from a novel is none other than the entertaining British spy James Bond created by Ian Fleming. I resemble him in many ways. First of all he is very daring just like me. He is ready to take any risk, which is like me being driven by the principle ‘no risk no gain’ and ‘no pain no gain’. He thinks a lot before doing any work just like me. He is a symbol of a true male like me as he does everything that a man should do. Everybody has a dream of being like James Bond. He is ready to face any serious circumstances in life like me. Like every other man he is fond of beautiful girls and tries to entertain them and enjoys himself as well. He is a diligent person who is eager to finish all the work he undertakes, just like me. Like me he is committed to his work and enthusiastic about complete it by any means or methods. Therefore, I resemble him and I am committed to develop other qualities of this legendary character.

— Dhrub Maharjan

Sherlock Holmes, who is the main character of Conan Doyle’s novel, comes spontaneously to my mind and heart as the one character I resemble. He is a sleuth, who utilises archetypal ideas to find criminals and is also a philanthropist. These heroic deeds dazzle the readers mind and it also provides aesthetic pleasure.

— Bishnu Karki

My favourite character is the Englishman’s character from the novel The Alchemist who I think I resemble the most. In the novel he is so busy savouring his books that he fails to acknowledge the joyous moments that passes along the way. I truly feel that becoming knowledgeable through metaphysics of books and not really enjoying the wonders of life is an ill habit of mine. However, I would definitely want to create synergy by experiencing the awe and mystery of everyday life.

— Dr Ujjwal Bikram Khadka

My favourite character that I resemble the most has definitely got to be Fred Parsley from my favourite book Girl, 15, Charming but Insane, by Sue Limb. Talking of appearance, I quite resemble him, in being tall, thin and a bit like an owl; but, more importantly, due to character and habits. I am into writing, and watching violent movies at the same time. He’s a bit not in tune with fashion and not one of those boys who run after girls. He is broke most of the time, however, manages to buy his Mum presents for her birthday. Overall, he’s a rebellious intellectual, a sweet person and a very nice friend — of the character ‘Jess’ and of me too.

I neither drink like a fish nor smoke like a chimney, but I can well relate to Bridget Jones of the Bridget Jones’ Diary fame by Helen Fielding. I make resolutions I can’t keep, I jot down my everyday happenings in my precious diary, which I can’t do without. Bridget Jones works as a reporter in a TV station where something usually goes wrong. My life too is less than perfect as I also work in a similar field. Besides that I am very conscious about my weight like her. But then again, who isn’t these days? When things go against me, I not only freak out, but also let my imagination run wild and predict something bad is about to happen even in the presence of my loved ones. I remember the time in the book when somebody sends her a threatening letter and she finds it hard to trust even Mark Darcy. In fact she gets scared to live in his big, white house, after her cosy little apartment grew a hole in the ceiling. Life without these tiny problems and anecdotes wouldn’t be fun to live

now, would it? Thanks to Helen Fielding for creating a character so close to myself in her book.

— Pritisha S

I compare myself with the cartoon character Hardy, the prime character of the comic book Laurel and Hardy. Hardy is very hefty and so am I.

— Eklaxmi Nepal

My favourite character is Cinderella because we can learn many things from her. We learn to be kind, loving and caring to the old and the poor. Friendly to our juniors and friends, respectful to our elders and our teachers. We learn to never answer back to our seniors, never talk rudely with anyone, and never tease helpless people and many more things.

— Junima Tamrakar

Comic book Chacha Chaudhary, the creation of noted Indian cartoonist Pran, is one of the best cartoon books that I always love to read. And I resemble Chachi in terms of innocence and open-heartedness. Though Chachi is open to all and has no malice in her behaviour yet people try to take advantage of her straightforward manner. She is lucky to have another character Sabu who is always beside her at the time of her trouble. Though I do not have anyone like Sabu around me as Chachi has, whenever I get into trouble someone comes to rescue me from my troubles. These are some of the features that makes me feel that I really resemble Chachi .

— Ambika Pandey,

Chitwan

My favourite character is Alexander McCall Smith’s Precious Ramotswe, the proprietor of the No1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in Botswana. I would like to be wise, brave and independent like her. But I have been told by my former employer that I am ‘arrogant’ and ‘snobbish’, marked qualities of Garfield, the cat. Incidentally that person bears a close resemblance to Jon (a ‘necktie’ and ‘suited’ version)! I do share the ginger cat’s love for food and a good snooze. Sometimes while writing (or attempting to write), I feel like the Nomad from Beau Peep.

— Usha Rai

As a book reader I have always been fascinated by the realism in characters whether it is in novels or comics. Personally I relate most to Betty from the comic Archies. Like her I am an introvert and I think though we want to speak our minds, most of the time we end up engulfing our own thoughts. She is also very kind and sometimes a bit naughty. These are some of the qualities that I think we have in common. It is not like she is sweet and nice all the time because situations may lead to any angel putting on their evil wings and working some evil thoughts. So I guess we both are naughty and nice at the same time.

I keep on suspecting everything. I don’t know why but I become interested everything around. I think this is all due to my favourite character ‘Sherlock Holmes — the detective’ by whom I am very much influenced. This is the character, which I enjoy the most and I think I somehow resemble to him. Last time I found a man running down the street crying “thief...thief...” I saw he was carrying a khukuri, and I thought he was the thief and pretending to chase another person to get away from the spot. I followed him and finally found that he was actually chasing the thief. I asked why was he with the knife, and he told me that even the thief had a knife and he was carrying his for self-defence. This happens to me frequently, I keep on getting into others problem trying to solve them. I don’t know if it is good or bad and where will it take me but I think I resemble “Sherlock Holmes”.

— Amit Kumar Singh,

Sarlahi

I just love Mahabharat. And the character I love most is Arjun. I don’t resemble Arjun in archery skills but in the power to concentrate. I read about him during my childhood days and his character has helped me in increasing my concentration power. On the day of exam, I can even study for hours without getting distracted. This is how I resemble to Arjun.

— Ganguly Singh,

Khushibun

The character I resemble the most is the tiny mouse of the book called Mrs Frisby and the rats of nymph. It is a tiny book one can finish in a short period of time but the main concept of this book is far more important than any other thick book. The little mouse is the one I resemble the most. It is a very important character in the book. He helps his colleagues a lot, is always ready to lend a hand and has a nice and pleasing behaviour. He even sacrifices his life for the sake of his mice generation. This is the most significant character a person should have. This mouse has proved that size doesn’t determine his ability or decency of the work he does. Therefore, I resemble this tiny mouse, which in a mass of human beings does not stand out but has a great character and embodies humanity, which a human being should possess.

— Pranit Sharma, Balaju

“You are the Alchemist,” one of my friends said in a very determined tone. I was shockingly surprised. I knew what alchemist meant. Alchemist changes lead into gold. On further questioning he continued, “You are an Alchemist for me” and handed me the novel Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Since I had not read the book, I asked the meaning and the reason behind it. “You have changed me and my entire vision of world and still you say it’s not me but your heart.” This was the reason behind. So I guess the title Alchemist fits me the best.

— Wreena

I am fascinated by guns, even duplicate ones. I always wish I had a gun and could use it to target whatever I see and feel like shooting. That is why I love James Bond, my hero. I love his stories and think my lucky number is 007. So James Bond is the one whom I resemble the most.

— Niraj Singh

My life is a novel, and I myself am the character representing me! There always has been more than one character. No one character is similar with me from the novels. And I don’t want to compare myself with the characters of stories. I have my individual thoughts, my individual feelings and I want my individual name! So rather than comparing, I would rather like to learn lessons from those characters and make changes in myself.

In my view, the character of Nancy Drew resembles me the most because she loves challenges like I do. She likes being accompanied by her best friends. She likes to help people in need of help. Her attitude makes me think that I resemble her the most.

— Neelam Shrestha

I like Full house. In this novel, I like Stephanie the most because she very sweet. She is a kind girl and is very loving. She is even naughty. The character that we share is that we both are naughty as well as kind and loving.

— Ava Pradhan,

Dhobighat

I like Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves the most, and Ali Baba is my favourite character. In the story. Ali Baba is a poor man but a very honest and kind person. He is always willing to help the person in need. I like his character because he is very kind generous and shows that kindness is the bigger thing and money can be earn later.

— Samikshya Regmi

My favourite character is Green Lantern because he has power in the ring. By the green ring, he beat some villain. I want to be just like him.

— Deepak Pathak

I have been reading the David Copperfield and it seems I am absorbed in it while finding a boy with tastes similar as mine. Though the life incidents are not exactly the same, they are similar in many ways regarding the childhood, the love life, the interests and so many yet to come. So far I think Copperfield best resembles me and to some extent I hope it is beaconing my life ahead.

— Surya Pandey

I like the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling very much. Like Harry, I am very helpful to other. I am ready to do anything help human kind.

— Kes Bahadur Pun, Pokhara

There are some Super-heroes like Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Flash etc. But I don’t think that I resemble any of them because I am scared of Bats and Spiders. I cannot be like Flash who is as fast as thunderstorms in the sky and I cannot be like Superman because I don’t wear my pants under my briefs.

So, being an ordinary person, I think I resemble TinTin the most. Like him, I am also adventurous who loves to travel all over and who likes to solve problems. We do have a similar haircut. TinTin has a dog, Snowy, which is white in colour, and I do have a black cat called Pussu.

— Saqir Mark
