An evening with Gurudev
Kathmandu: Gurukul Sangeet Pathsala, Kathmandu organised ‘Suramya Sandhya’, a presentation of Classical Khayal, Thumri and Ghazal of Nepali, Urdu and Hindi composition — a solo performance by the renowned classical vocalist Shree Gurudev Kamat — at Jain Bhawan, Kamalpokhari on May 14.
Kamat was accompanied by Prem Chand Ojhaiya and Raju Agrawal in Tabla, Santosh Bhakta Shrestha in Ishraj and Tuna Bhatta and Guru’s daughter Sushila Kamat in Tanpura.
Starting with a Mangal Geet, “Mangal Gaun Sabai Guni Janako”, he performed 12 songs of different genres of classical music amidst his teacher, students, songwriters and the lovers of classical music. With a minimal musical instruments, he was playing with sounds — high and low, fast and slow.
The programme was organised to uplift classical music in Nepal and to inculcate the value and power of the classical music in the younger generation of Nepali listeners.
His achievements include attaining the first position for classical vocal singing and second position for modern singing at the All Nepal Classical and Modern Light Music Competition organised by Radio Nepal on the occasion of its 45th anniversary in 1994. Kamat is proficient at all three aspects of music — singing, playing instruments and dancing. He has been performing both at national and international programme for long. — HNS
