BC marks World Book Week

Kathmandu:

When you get immersed into a book, you get lost in a world that is created by the words in the book and can create a world of your own with the imagination it generates. The significance it holds in a persons life as a mentor and a friend is immensely felt by someone who knows its worth. Knowing the value reading has and to introduce it to people who are still unaware of the pleasures of reading, a special programme is being organised by the British Council. The World Book Week started here on April 23, the day which has been designated by UNESCO as the World Book Day.

From painting competitions for school children to discussions on importance of reading to an exhibition of 200 new titles, the fair something that a book lover would enjoy.

Students from various schools were drawing and painting for the Bookmark Competition on the theme being ‘I Love Reading’.

The students of classes IV-V participated in the competition on the first day, while students of VI-VII were busy trying to make the best piece of art on April 24. The competition will be held for students of VII-VIII on April 25.

The competition is held between 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with five groups of 20 students each participating in it.

Three prizes will be given away in each category — the first, second and third prize winners will be awarded book gift vouchers of Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 respectively. They also win a free library membership for one year at BC. The winners will be declared on May 1 (www.britishcouncil.org/nepal).

Discussions on the importance of reading will be held from 5:00 pm.

The main purpose of the World Book Week is to help children and adults to discover the pleasures of reading and to encourage reluctant readers to read.
