British film fest ends today

KATHMANDU: The sixth British Film Festival is closing on January 19 with Joyeux Noel, a film that celebrates humanitarian spirit during the grim days of conflict. According to John Fry, Country Manager of the British Council, the movie has “a relevant message for Nepal as it shows how humanity and human values override political division”.

The film takes place in the Europe during the Christmas of 1914. When a conscripted opera singer on German side displays his vocal skills during a Yuletide visit from his soprano girlfriend, the pipes of Scottish padre and his regiment occupying the opposing trenches with French allies soon accompany his rendition of Silent Night.

The three sides discover unexpected connections emerging between them, and they agree on a brief truce. The movie is in a European language with English subtitles. It will be screened at Gopi Krishna Movies at 6:30 pm.
