Kathmandu:

Some people eat to live but there are many who actually live to eat. Hotel Yak and Yeti had organised a promotional event for the food lovers of Nepal called The Chinese Food Festival from February 8 to February 9. The festival was organised to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which is the year of the Rooster this time.

The hotel has its own authentic way of celebrating this occasion. The Sunrise Café has been lit up with lanterns and the buffet counter decorated with red fabric, a symbolic manifestation of joy. Nilesh Sanghvi, executive chef, has exhibited his Chinese innovations to tease one’s taste buds. There are a numerous variety of delicious Chinese delicacies like Prawns with Sweet Peppers and Oyster sauce, Braised Duck with Plum Sauce, Shredded Lamb with Black Pepper Sauce, Fried Chicken Momos, Mushroom and Sprouts Spring Rolls, etc. As a gesture to the guests coming in for buffet lunch/dinner, the price of which was 799 and 699 with taxes respectively, the café offered Jasmine Tea from the beginning as it is believed that it keeps one’s appetite in good shape. In China, food like chicken, eggs, dried bean curd, noodles and oranges are believed to bring in wealth, prosperity, long life, fertility and happiness. There are many superstitions related to New Year in China. The first person one meets and the first words heard are significant as to what the fortunes would be for the entire year. It is also a lucky sign to see or hear songbirds or red-coloured birds or swallows. An out-of-the-world experience for those who like to experiment with new cuisines!
