Fusion of music and words

Kathmandu:

A unique fusion of music and poem Prem and Nari was presented at the Gurukul by the Association of St Mary’s Alumnae Nepal on September 25. The programme featured evocative poems by Bimla Tumkhewa and tabla performance by Sarita Mishra. This unique combination did attract a lot of audience as the Sama Hall was packed with people despite the rain.

Most of Tumkhewa’s poems were expressions of different people struggling with the tragedy in life like the one titled Smriti, which brought out the confusion due to lack of identity and pain in a widow of a soldier. She had dedicated the programme to her parents, and she said, “I want to thank them for loving my poems like they loved me.”

The poem was able to touch the hearts of the audience as it received the loudest applause. Her other poems also depicted the sorrow of loss and the struggle people are going through in the country. She was also able to put in words what people think when they see something happening around them and their perception of other people. Other poems were Samundra ra udaas pari, Hiyun ko atit, Sapna, Tyo manis among others.

Mishra’s performance was in perfect harmony as the sound of her tabla created the ambience in touch with Tumkhewa’s poems. In between the poems, the beats of her tabla kept the mood alive and the audience got the exceptional treat of the combination of music and words.
