Gai Jatra with our cartoonists

KATHMANDU:

The ‘preparation’ for the Naya Nepal Byangya (Satirical) Art Exhibition 2007 started right on time on August 27 with a lady sweeping the hall where the exhibition was to be held National Association of Fine Arts (NAFA) at the hour the exhibition was scheduled to be inaugurated. After loitering in the dusty hall for sometime daring the rashes that would erupt soon afterwards, it was finally announced the formal programme would be held in the hall.

The cartoonists, artists and illustrators along with mediapersons waited patiently for the programme to start, while some photographers got busy taking pictures of children playing at Bal Mandir.

The programme started much later than the scheduled time with the arrival of chief guest Sher Bahadur Deuba, Chairman of Nepali Congress (Democratic).

Organised by the Leo Club of Kathmandu, Ring Road in association with Fortune Consultancy on the occasion of Gaijatra, the sole intention of the exhibition was letting the public see the condition of new Nepal in both political and social aspects. The exhibition was successful

in presenting the real picture of Nepal.

The exhibition showcases works by veteran artists like Sashi Bikram Shah and Durga Baral along with new comers like Sanjeev Maharjan and Rabi Mishra.

It was a pleasant surprise to see female artists taking keen interest in illustrations. Some were bright and colourful, some were plain black but all had a message. The cartoons

were all a stinging satire on the Nepali political environment. Cartoonist Baral was presented with a special certificate and khada at the event.

The exhibition is on till September 2.
