Jolie breaks down in Afghanistan

LONDON: Visiting Afghanistan for the first time, Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie broke down in tears after witnessing the plight of refugees who have returned home.

The actress, who wore a traditional dress, spent last Wednesday and Thursday visiting poverty-stricken families living in squalid conditions in Nangarhar and Kabul, reports mirror.co.uk.

“Since the fall of the Taliban in 2001 more than five million Afghans have returned home. Afghanistan has been struggling to absorb these massive returns,” she said.

“These families have been displaced for nearly 30 years and many of them face difficulties including food, shelter and basic services such as healthcare and education. They have suffered so much yet they remain gracious,” she added. Jolie travelled to Afghanistan as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
