Intermediate Nepali For Foreigners is written by Ganga Prasad Uprety for non-Nepali speakers, especially for those who have studied basic Nepali for at least one year. Uprety, an associate Professor at Tribhuvan University, Campus of International Languages (CIL), has written it taking into consideration the course he teaches at the Bishwa Bhasha Campus.

The author has introduced Nepali language, and in the process he has also attempted to introduce the country. He tries to do so in its 20 chapters by incorporating history, culture and other such topics as the main reading section. This is then followed by a vocabulary and a grammar section to help the student assimilate the written material at the beginning of the chapter and finally, at the end of each chapter there is an exercise for the student to complete.

The book is very comprehensive and deals with varied topics like Nepali language, diverse ethnic groups living in Nepal, the main religions and festivals celebrated in Nepal, and folk literature, and Nepali literature including poems and essays by renowned Nepali writers.

Although the book’s language may be a little difficult to comprehend for one with basic knowledge, it does entail an extensive vocabulary at the end of every chapter. The book aims to enable one to achieve an intermediate level of Nepali so as to converse fluently with native speakers. It accentuates on authenticity and the tasks are suited to practical needs to enable efficient communicative skills emphasising on grammatical and writing skills. However, for basic conversing, it is advisable to refer to a basic guide rather than reading a book that deals with extensive topics.
