Movies that changed us…

Some of those movies that have touched me are Kagaj Ke Phool and Baghban.

Only a successful person is worshiped in this world and no one cares about failures, this strong message is given in the movie Kagaj Ke Phool. Baghban is another movie that has touched me deeply. The movie has depicted the agony of a father in such a way that it touches you and even makes you cry each time you watch the movie. The indifferent attitude of the children towards the parents immediately after the father retires from his job seems shocking and heartrending. The condition of parents shown in the picture is not an exaggeration but a ground reality. Children are getting so negligent and selfish that they hardly realise the sacrifices their parents have made for them and their well-being, this reality has been shown in the movie. Personally, the message I have drawn from the movie is that old and aged people too do have feelings and dreams and children should respect and value them. Monetary gain should not be the motto of life. There are many things that we cannot buy even after we spend millions, like our parents love and blessings. The movie also gives the message that those are wise people who value their parents and take good care of them.

Taare Zameen Par is one such movie which brought a change in the way I see children. It made me feel that every child is special and each of them have a unique talent which no other child possesses. So, we should never neglect any child thinking he is worthless and he cannot do anything in life, we should never kill the child’s hobbies but should nurture it. We should never behave rudely with any child and should join hands to help the poor and helpless child because many Einstein’s, Edison’s, Newton’s and Darwin’s are not being able to show their talents because they lack opportunity due to poverty. So, ‘Save the children and shape the world.’

Movies are made not only to entertain us but also provide us knowledge that may be valuable for our lives. I have seen some fantastic movies which helped me to find the solution of my problems. In the latest movie, Om Shanti Om, the lines said by one of the actors — that if we want anything from the depth of our hearts then even fate and coincidences bring it to you, is a big message. When we want something from the depth of our hearts, we ourselves try really hard to get it and hard work never goes to waste.

The movie named Laaga Chunari Me Daag showed the importance of education for a girl. It showed how the main character was forced to become a prostitute. If she was well educated she may have had other options like her sister. It also shows how the behaviour of family and society changed when one becomes independent.

Movies do change the way we look at things and also entertain us at the same time. One such movie that has changed the way I look at things is Freaky Friday starring Lindsay Lohan. Through this movie, I have learnt that people differ in thoughts and nature and you cannot understand anyone unless you BE that person yourself. This movie has also helped me look at life in a new way, teaching me that nobody’s life is perfect and we all have our own share of troubles and obstacles. Yet, we manage to get through these troubles in the end, this is the way life is.

Because of Winn-Dixie is a movie based on a novel which really inspired me as it was so lively, entertaining and refreshing. It carried me to the world of Opal, the lead character. In the film Opal gains wisdom and different outlooks on life through relationships with adults and peers, and grows emotionally in the process searching for Winn - Dixie, her dog. She also rekindles her strained relationship with her father. This film helped me analyse the simplicity of life and to strengthen my relationships with people I meet. I’ve seen many other films which have inspired me to strengthen values like patriotism, honesty, love and simplicity, but Because of Winn Dixie will always remain an exceptional film that opened up something inside my heart and helped me smile from inside.

Black the movie based on one of the most courageous and determined, physically challenged woman, Helen Keller, was the movie that left me thinking in a different way and helped me live more sensibly. Most of the time, movies never touch me emotionally, and moreover, I was in to comedies rather than serious biographies and sentimental tragedies. But after I watched Black, I started taking things more seriously; I realised what my senses were worth, I thanked Him for everything, I had taken for granted before. It was truly satisfying because, previously when I watched young, good looking and entertaining characters I tended to envy them or merely dismiss them without a second thought. But the characters portrayed in Black were very inspiring and got me to think of my future and myself closely and more meaningfully.

Some movies contain powerful message which inspire us, some Nepali movies that have touched me are Balidan, which has MaHa. It moved me and evoked feelings of revolution that ought to be initiated from the grass root level of our country. This movie has given the message that sacrifice for the betterment of one’s motherland is the most important thing.

— Anjan Gurung, Pokhara

The movie that I really liked was Traffic Signal which shows how beggars spend their lives, how they collect money their lifestyle and lots more. This movie depicted the reality of the lives of people living on the streets.

As far as movies are concerned, I was highly fascinated by the movie Rang De Basanti which left a huge impact on me and was able to bring a great change in my way I perceive things. This picture acknowledges the fact that the young generation can effectively develop their nation. It simply portrays how a layman can contribute to the nation if they are eager and determined to do so. In the film it shows how people can be motivated. As a result, they sacrifice their life in the hope that their nation will prosper. These youngsters are an epitome of patriotic citizens. The film also encouraged me to come out from opulence and have a glance at the current affairs of the nation. It influenced me so much that I was confident to do anything, even to demolish the traitors of the nation.

I recently watched Taare Zameen Par and this film really touched me especially the young boy’s acting which was fabulous. This film teaches one about showing love and affection towards a dyslexic child. It really brought a change in my attitude, I now have a better understanding of children. In the hall I saw women and girls crying their heart out while watching the movie. I recommend all the readers to watch this movie atleast once.

Among the films I have watched, Lage Raho Munnabhai played a role of a catalyst in my life. The movie gives a message of sacrifice and having a good character. In fact, it developed tolerance, patience and self-dependence in me. It also impressed me with the life-enhancing sayings of Mahatma Gandhi that the movie has. It taught me to view everything positively and to be patient in times of difficulty. I learned that we can find solutions to our problems if we walk the path of truth. Fair and true love, benevolence, kindness, social etiquettes and social service are some of the qualities this movie taught me. As a whole, it brought about a substantial change in my life.

The movie Babul changed me. People say that sati pratha has been eliminated but some signs of it still linger in society. The removal of vermillion and red sari of a woman after her husband’s death is also a part of sati pratha. Moreover, what it shows is that the death of her husband is not the end of her life and happiness. After I watched the movie, I decided to work and struggle for the welfare and rights of the women.

— Rebati Adhikary, Nepaltar

The movie that changed my thinking is the Shanghai Kiss which emphasises on love for the nation. As I was also born in a foreign country I had no interest in my home country Nepal which was burning in conflict for several years and was suffering a lot. I was frightened to come to this country but after watching the movie I dared to come to my homeland and visited my family members. I really liked it here and felt that I should do all I can for Nepal as it is my country and I must respect it.

“It is not Ernesto Che Guevara that the leading actor of this movie is portraying, it’s me!” — That’s what I said when I first saw the movie Motorcycle Diaries. Although this saga of Che’s adventure to explore Latin America has nothing to do with him as an agitating revolutionist, the movie clearly shows the driving force behind the transformation of 23 year old medical student into a rebellion prodigy.

The first thing that strikes Che during his adventure is the poverty and suffering of the lower classes of society. He also notices the deep rooted aristocracy which separates people from their rulers by a vast margin. At one point during his adventure Che demolishes all the atrocious ethics when he chooses to swim to the leper colony and spends the night there; the move which clearly symbolises the path he would take in his future fighting for the dignity every human being deserves.

What Che saw in 1951 is an epidemic in our country right now. If someone wants to have a clear look at it, pack the knapsack and get lost. Our people have a lot of superstition, hatred, exploitation, discrimination, oppression, violence, contempt, abuse, denigration and god knows what else to offer. And interestingly you don’t have to be a Marxist like Che to do so because this is entirely not a political agenda. And Che Guevara is not a style statement. That mysterious icon looming on t-shirts and bandana’s of many youngsters has one hell of a story to tell. The movie is a must watch.

Taare Zameen Par is a gem of a movie that has touched me a lot. This is a movie that should be watched by all teachers and parents to understand children’s psychology. It not only incorporates the message that every child is special but also makes people aware of the new pattern that can be brought into studies without letting children feel the burden. Therefore, I truly believe that Taare Zameen Par is one movie which incorporates a message without compromising on the entertainment quotient.

The movie Dakshina by Tulsi Ghimire is a comedy but is educational as well. It give the message about respecting teachers and elders. After watching the movie I I have started respecting my teachers and elders.

— Sandesh Adhikari

The most interesting film with an effective message I have ever watched is Basketball Diaries which has Leonardo De Caprio as the lead character. In this film he is shown as a college boy with who is an amazing basketball player. He is so good at it that he is qualified to be a national player of the US basketball team too. But with the passage of time his skills start deteriorating as he gets addicted to drugs. This ruins his reputation in front of his coach and he even leaves his home. As he gets more and more addicted his inherent talent also dies away. In this way the movie tries to incorporate the bad impact of the drugs, the writer obviously wants to create awareness among youngsters not to use drugs. After watching this movie I stopped smoking marijuana and suggest others to leave such habits too and adopt good ones.

The Nepali film Army is one movie that has changed my life. From this movie, I have learnt that we should be courageous, patriotic, disciplined, industrious and punctual. We should never lose our heart and step back whatever happens, even if we have to loose our lives. We should be loyal to the country and should always walk on the path of truth. I have learned how we can save our country from being destroyed and how we can have an identity of our own in a mass of soldiers. It has really helped me build my ambition and inspired me to a great extent.

Lage Raho Munnabhai is the film that touched me and made me think. It has totally transformed my mind and firmly established the notion that ‘non-violence’ is the most effective means for attainment of goals in life. Gandhigiri shown in the film can be put into practice in any aspect of our lives. Moreover, the presentation of the story is entertaining and effective. The film has revived the forgotten strength of ahimsa. Shouldn’t we start to practice Gandhigiri in present chaotic situation of our country for the accomplishment of our objectives where everybody thinks violence as panacea?

— Mahesh Neupane, Rampur, Chitwan

The movie The Trade was about a desperate boy trying to rescue his little sister kidnapped by sex traders of Mexico. I changed my way of believing that sex business is like any other business. This movie gave me a clear insight about sex trade. After seeing the brother’s feelings towards his innocent sister I changed my perception and realised the difficulties of so many Nepali sisters who are facing the same situations.

I found the film Taare Zameen Par really meaningful. This is a film which every teacher and parent must watch at least once. I was very impressed by the message it gave that ‘every child is special’. We want our children to do what we think is best for them, but few of us try to know the capabilities of the child. We try to make them special in our own way without knowing their abilities. After watching the movie I have stopped pressurising my younger brother. I have always wanted him to be first in class and have always ignored his artistic talents. From now on I have decided that I will never put pressure on him to stand first in class. I have realised that he is special in his own way. Thanks to the entire team of Taare Zameen Par without whom I would have never got this important lesson.

There are a number of movies which have really changed the way I think. For instance, Caravan by Eric Valli, this movie drew my attention back to the place where I belong to. The overall theme broadened my thinking paradigm in remote and pristine laps of mountains where nature and culture have peacefully co-existed for centuries. Because of the touching message of uncertainty the lives of people in the mountains I was deeply absorbed to work and think about them.
