PEOPLESPEAK: Celeb nuptials news: Sheer waste of space
The majority of our readers feel that it is not at all good to devote space and time to celebrity happenings, that it is almost criminal to do so. However, a few feel that celebrity happenings do need coverage because celebrities are role models in a society and their fans have a right to know what is happening in their idol’s life
I think every individual has their own personal life, and there is a limit to how much of their private lives can be publicised.
Moreover, celebrities being a part of society, have their own life as well. Though news related to celebrities generates massive interest, I don’t think it deserves as much attention as the media gives. There are other more important sectors that media should concentrate on.
— Radhika Byanjankar, Patan
In my opinion, I believe that such news deserve much attention as it does. For it would not be justice to their huge fan following, that wants every nitty-gritty of their nuptials.
— Kes Bahadur Pun, Simpani
Be it celebrities or common people, they all have their private lives. But people usually assume celebrities as public figures and that the public has every right to interfere in their lives — both private and professional. If a person wants to keep this matter out of public eyes and the media and want to keep it a private affair, nobody has the right to intervene or interfere. Moreover, celebrity life is often a lavish one, one out of reach of the common people. At times, it has been seen that even common people try to emulate their lifestyle though they hardly have the means to support such a living. This in turn can be the reason of so many social problems that we get to see in our society today. So, in the age of media bombardment, the media should take care while choosing news stories and avoid those that can create a negative impact on the common people.
— Ambika Pandey, Chitwan
Media focusing on celebrity marriages is an example of the paradox that we live in today. It’s ironical that media gives all its attention to celebrities, while there are thousands of people struggling to make ends meet. Rather than bringing their problems to the fore, the media seems only concerned with celebrity events that make no sense to hundreds of thousands of people who struggle to make a living. It’s really shameful!
— Rajan Adhikari
It is understandable that media, emphasising on celebrity news, is pandering to public curiosity, but at the same time it is wasting its time by avoiding news that could be of a greater concern to the common public. Don’t think that though people are interested in celebrity news, they are also interested in the nitty-gritty of every and every celebrity event including marriages.
— Sumnima Khatri
For admirers and fans, celebrity news could be of a prime concern and over everything else. On the other hand, prioritising news, which are meaningless at the cost of other vital issues, which concern a larger public, could be detrimental. The media should know how to strike a balance and not overstep the boundaries of their responsibility.
— Sita Bhandari
I think celebrity news should not be given as much attention as it is being given now. As far as celebrity weddings are concerned, I don’t think the event deserves major headlines and extensive coverage on television channel. Instead the space and time devoted to celebrity events could be given to more important issues, which are of a concern to a larger public.
— Aneesha Bhattarai
It is not that the news and views of celebrities must deserve attention, but we give them attention so that we can have some fun. Moreover we get a topic to talk about to add some excitement to our daily life. Nothing happens to these people if we give them attention, but if the events entertain us there is nothing wrong in media paying attention to them.
— Vipul Kabra, Putalisadak
In my opinion, celebrity news should not be given as much attention as it is being given. Apart from celebrity marriages, there are other important news, which concern the common public. Celebrity marriages grabbing major headlines in the newspapers devalue the ethics and importance of media.
— Rikesh Bharati
Yes, I think that celebrity weddings deserve the attention that it does. Celebrities are often role models in their society and the fans are keen to know about the nitty-gritty of such an important event in their lives. The media can’t afford to ignore news, which are of vital concern to millions of fans.
— Tariq Hasan, Nepalgunj
Celebrities do hold a distinguished status in society and the extensive coverage of their weddings is only normal. But coverage of each and every trivial event related to weddings at the cost of important national and international news is not justifiable. This sort of trend, where such unimportant news get space and priority, while other news that are important from a social, economic or political point of view, get sidelined shows that media is getting commercialised.
— Bibek Dhakal, Baluwatar
News related to celebrity events is just dispensable and only aimed at entertaining the readers or viewers. Celebrity news embraces only a handful of audience and can hardly contribute to any constructive feedback to society. Such news should be given the least priority.
— Pranav Dhakal, Battisputali
Celebrity marriages and whatever details do not at all deserve to be the major headlines. By printing such news about upper class families and their extravagant lifestyle, the media is essentially disregarding and marginalising the middle and lower class people. The media is also deciding who gets to be the so-called ‘celebrities’ and imposing this on the readers. I can’t see why the whole country ought to ‘celebrate’ the news of such ‘media-made celebrities’.
— Solar Clouds
Many people take the celebrities as a role model and want to know every single thing about them. Newspapers and televisions make celebrity marriages major headlines just to grab the attention of the people. In my opinion, all these commotion is useless and these kinds of news don’t deserve much attention as it does.
