PEOPLESPEAK: Making and keeping New Year resolutions

1. Try to be happy all the time.

2. Save money for tomorrow

3. Control of anger

4. Get rid of smoking habit

— Saral Shrestha

I have never been able to keep my New Year resolutions genuinely, but I cannot stop myself from making one every New Year. Last year, I promised to make a habit of waking up early every morning and see the beauty of the rising sun, which regrettably I couldn’t keep. Nevertheless, I want to make the same resolution this year and make sure that I stick to it.

— Sumnima Khatri

My resolution for this New Year is similar to the one I made last year. Now that we are entering a new era, it’s everybody’s wish to see Nepal head in the direction of peace and prosperity. It’s time for us now to unite and do something to that effect. I would give up my arrogance and anger and urge every Nepali to stand and unite together to build a prosperous and New Nepal.

— Kes Bahadur Pun, Simpani

For a student, no resolution is more important than to work harder to perform better in examinations. I have always worked hard to meet my expectations and most often I’ve lived upto them by studying sincerely and not being distracted. My resolution will remain the same even in the years to come.

— Krisha Amatya

A new year is the time to make fresh commitments and to forget them soon. Last year I made a vow to work harder after facing disappointment when the results were out. Sadly, I could never stick to it. So rather than making commitments that I can’t keep I’ve decided to amend my resolutions instead. This New Year, I plan to be more helpful, more cheerful, loving and caring towards my parents, seniors and my juniors. My resolution is to do little good things that make a difference.

— Manish Niraula

This year I’m making some special resolutions and hope to stick by it. I’ve made it my New Year resolution to speak less and concentrate more on action. I always get punished in my class because I’m unable to curb this habit, but I will make it a point that I will not give my teacher a chance to punish me for being a chatterbox. If ever I’m troubled by the urge to make noise in the class, I’ll meditate instead.

— Deepika Sakha, Bhaktapur

Having failed to keep the first ever resolution that I made, I’m planning to make a different resolution this time. I’ve planned to make people around me happier and probably also find a job and make money. A job will not only keep me engaged but will also help me make my parents a little bit happier.

— Surya, Naikap

My resolution for the year 2064 is not to hurt anyone either deliberately or unknowingly. I have realised that love and care of people around you is far more important in life than success that you’ve no one to share. I know its tough but I shall try my best to keep it. But before I even make this resolution, I apologise to everyone who I might have hurt at one time or another.

— Sharib Ali, Biratnagar

New year is the time that we make some endeavour to better our self and make some resolutions. Resolutions are made to be broken, at least that’s the case for me because every year I think of a new plan — getting up early in the morning, not telling lies and so on, but fail after a couple of days. This time I have made a firm decision not to have any favourites in a cricket match. What’s the use of staying up late in the night to end up on the losing side? My best team always loses and I feel quite miserable. So, now onwards I wont cheer any side and just enjoy the game.

— Nishant Shandilya, Baluwatar

This year I’m planning to become a vegetarian. Vegetarian diets are not only good for health but also reduce animal slaughter. There is saying that every single drop of water contributes to make ocean, I believe my contribution to become a vegetarian will definitely help as well.

— Shree Laxmi Karmacharya, Maharajgunj

New year’s resolutions — easy to make, easy to break. By making new year’s resolutions are we inevitably setting ourselves up for failure? Often, the simple answer is ‘yes’. What is good about the dawn of a new year is that it gives us an incentive to ‘start again’, to discard the bad habits of the previous year and begin afresh. We might resolve to meditate more assiduously, be more tolerant of others, to give more freely, and to be more focused on what is really important in life. But how do we stick to these promises? Grit and determination are no doubt necessary ingredients. It’s not just about giving things up, it is also about replacing bad habits and inclinations with good ones. This is not usually an easy process — it requires commitment and perseverance. It means being aware of our negative tendencies and, where possible, nipping them in the bud.

— Nitu Kedia

I start endeavours with great passion and enthusiasm, but my enthusiasm, passion and inspiration ends midway. This lack of continuity in action has done more harm than good. Moreover, I am unable to comprehend how I acquired such a habit. Of late I have been reading books on self-improvement strategies that help you get rid of your bad habits, obviously to no avail. I have been making resolutions that I will get rid of this habit of mine, but have not been able to do so. So, I bet you already know what resolution I would want to make and keep in the year 2064.

— Dr Ujjwal Bikram Khadka, Atterkhel, Jorpati

Live in high self-esteem — that is my resolution. I believe in the thought — BAD or Be Always Different.

— Bishal Gurung

I have not made a resolution and I will not in future. I don’t believe in the so-called new year resolutions. If one wants to bring some changes in one’s life, then one does not have to wait for a new year to do so.

— Justin

I will try to be optimistic in order to live a strees-free life and to achieve success. I will keep myself busy doing creative work.

— Ramesh Bhatta, US

My resolution would be to ‘have control on my anger’. I get angry very fast and it has disturbed the smooth running of my life.

— Meena Subedi, Kalanki

I am quite short tempered, and due to this a lot of my friends and dear and near one get irritated with me. My resolution would definitely be to control this negative aspect of my personality.

— Sita Bhandari

From this day onwards I will speak very nicely to others because you don’t lose anything by saying two words of kindness.

— Rasmita Budhathoki

I had set two resolutions for the year 2063. And honestly speaking, I am quite satisfied with what I have done. This year, I have not made any new resolution. Rather I am planning to give continuity to the same good old work that i did last year, that is to support old and helpless people so that they do not feel neglected, and also help the destitute children so that they feel they are the part of society.
