PICK OF THE WEEK: China’s tough Olympic trainings

Imagine being picked to train for the Olympics at the age of three — well that’s what’s been happening in China. Lots of people there think training children from a really young age is the only way to win Olympic medals. One teacher at a school that’s created four Olympic gymnasts in the past 36 years said being really strict was the only way to create champions. There are 400,000 children training for hours on end in 3,000 schools across China in the hope of one day becoming an Olympian. Critics of China’s training methods say it’s cruel to treat children like this, but the deputy head of China’s Li Xiaoshuang Gymnast school disagrees. “They don’t understand the spirit of our teaching.”
