PICK OF THE WEEK: Love tunes and male mice

Scientists have found that male mice actually sing to spark romance with girl mice. But you won’t notice the tiny squeaks as the noise is ultrasonic - outside the range of what humans can hear. Experts at the University of Washington, USA, studied squeaks made by mice when they smelled a female and found they formed complicated songs. The scientists made the discovery by accident while they were studying what happened to male mice when they smelled female mice. Recordings of the squeaks showed that the noises weren’t being made at random but there were patterns in regular, repeated rhythms, sounding like birdsong.
