PICK OF THE WEEK : Push to reduce animal experiments

London: The government and scientists must do more to reduce the amount of animal testing, according to a report. It was put together by a panel of 18 experts, including animal protection groups and scientists. The report said the “ultimate goal” would be where research could be done without causing pain, lasting harm or death to the animals involved. It also called for animal testing groups to share information and for more funding to help resolve the issue. Last year, nearly 2.8m animals were involved in scientific procedures in the UK. The report says that it’s unlikely that animal experiments will end in the near future. — Agencies
