Porters’ plight wins graphic design contest

The winners of the ‘Design & Win’ graphic design competition organised by Pencil Education Pvt Ltd in association with Billy Blue College of Design, Think: Education Group was announced amidst a function on February 18.
Margie Thomas, Regional Marketing Manager of Think: Education Group, Australia gave prizes to the winners and certificates to the top 20 participants at Gallery 32 at Dent -inn.
A porter of the Himalayan region carrying loads which included the various activities that tourists indulge in while in Nepal bagged the first prize for Bidhan Rajbhandari. The winner said that he went through documentaries and movies made about the Himlayan region and thus focussed on the main occupation of the people of the region which is of a porter.
“I have tried to show the burden they take over their shoulder and have also shown the various adventure sports in which porters assist tourists. By using finger prints as the path I
have highlighted the problem of illiteracy that is prevalent among this community,” he added.
While the collage of small photos that forms the face of a child by Atish Chitrakar with the slogan, ‘I can be one of them’ written on it was declared the first runner up and Pradeep KC’s landscape with mountains in the background and children running to school got the second runner up prize. The first prize winner got Apple iMac while the two runners up got Apple ipod.
The contestants had to design a poster for promoting education programme run by Australian Himalayan Foundation in Khumbu region and the theme was ‘Helping the people of the Himalayan achieve their goals’.
An exhibition of the top twenty designs including the three winners was also inaugurated by Thomas at the Gallery 32.
The exhibition is on till March 3.
