Soccer fun at Khundunabari
KATHMANDU:
A group of people recently travelled all the way from Kathmandu, braved swollen rivers, rains and floods, to reach the Khundunabari Refugee camp located in Jhapa, to distribute branded sporting (football) kit to the children at this camp.
Among the four who travelled to Khundunabari was Grady Walker, who is making a documentary on the Bhutanese refugees. Their sole intent was to distribute the Adidas kit that were meant especially for the refugee children. But they say that they weren’t prepared for the huge ceremony and the welcome that awaited them there.
According to Tseten Namgyal, one of the group members, they had expected it to be a quiet affair but those at the refugee camp had prepared an entire day’s function with football matches — men, women and children’s and other things.
What they returned with was more than the refugee children’s excitement and joy at getting branded, brand new soccer kit, but the realisation that it takes only a little to bring a smile into a person’s life.
