STUDY TABLE: Tradition of excellence

Winona State University was founded in 1858 when the first Minnesota State Legislature established normal schools “to prepare teachers for the common schools of the state.”

In 1975, the school became Winona State University. Three campuses now comprise the University. The original Winona campus and the Winona West campus serve primarily traditional students, while the Rochester campus focuses on non-traditional students, graduate programs and the Institute for Lifelong Education.

College of Business: The College of Business is focused on providing high-quality professional education in business. The College of Business programs emphasize high expectations; strong verbal, written, and quantitative skills; ethical behavior; and cultural diversity, all of which will enhance the development of our students as critical thinkers and business decision makers. The College of Business offers to its students many opportunities to experience real business situations through internship programs, tours to companies, guest speakers from business and industry, and research opportunities.

College of Education: The traditions of excellence and service to the external community began here in 1858. Undergraduate and graduate programs in the College have expanded to include these programs, along with several specializations, professional education sequences and minors like:

College of Liberal Arts: It essential to possess certain core skills that will remain useful no matter how specific industries evolve or your own life plans change. Among these skills are critical thinking, effective writing, dynamic speaking, and sound team working. These are the essence of liberal arts education.

Nursing and health sciences: These programs are designed to graduate caring, ethical, competent, and progressive professionals who are sensitive to diversity and prepared to work with clients through health promotion, prevention of health problems, and caring during illness.

The College of Science and Engineering: Professions in these areas are preparing students for the ever-changing landscape of Science, business and life in the modern world, they will soar to the top of their professions as talented technicians, skilled communicators, independent thinkers and innovative problem solvers.
