Swift takes home first Grammy

LONDON: Country music singer Taylor Swift enjoyed an early triumph at Sunday night's (31Jan10) Grammys - after collecting her first ever award at the prestigious ceremony.

The 20 year old collected two prizes at the beginning of the ceremony, Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance, both for her record White Horse.

Swift, who has eight Grammy nods, is still up for the evening's three top awards. Her album Fearless is nominated for Album Of The Year, and her song You Belong With Me is nominated for both Record and Song Of The Year.

Taking to the stage to collect her first prize, Swift cheered: "This is my first Grammy you guys! I mean this is a Grammy! I live in awe of the people I was nominated against in this category ...and all of the wonderful and incredibly talented musicians in Nashville... I'm so happy. Thank you so much."

Swift has become a Grammy favourite in recent months, after capturing top prizes from the Country Music Association Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards.

Other early winners included pop singer Lady Gaga, who won Best Dance Recording for Poker Face and Best Electronic/dance Album for The Fame, and Indian composer AR Rahman, who won two trophies for his soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.
