The new face of politics on screen

Get a glimpse of Nepal’s new government; a female Prime Minister and an ideal constitution in the upcoming serial Singha Durbar! Here is what the young cast have to share with TGIF

Pramod Agrahari, Actor

He portrays Yubaraj, a young political leader.

What parallels can you draw between Singha Durbar and the current political scenario?

I think Singha Durbar reflects a Nepal that we all want. It showcases a completely different political scene from the current one.

What role do you think gender plays in running of a country?

I think gender plays absolutely no role. We have witnessed men running the country but we are yet to see how women would lead. Maybe they’ll be better at it. The most important thing is the individual’s capability to add value to the country’s development.

In the series, other than Gauri Malla, who do you see fit for the role?

I think for a lead role like the one in Singha Durbar, you need somebody who has a control over their performance. So honestly, I do not see anybody doing it better than Gauri Malla.

The television drama ‘Singha Durbar’ revolves around the story of Nepal’s first female Prime Minister who faces various challenges in her quest to establish a governance system of transparency, accountability and collaborative leadership. Directed by Tsering Rhiter Sherpa the 13 episode serial is a joint production of Search for Common Ground Nepal and Mila Productions and supported by USAID Nepal. The serial is slated to go on air soon.

Bhintuna Joshi, Actor

She plays the role of Sumnima Bajracharya, Prime Minister Asha’s Personal Assistant.

Would you have been more comfortable playing the lead role?

It would be a dream come true! Although I love my character, it is very different from what I have been doing; the lead would be a challenge.

Would there be any changes in the country today, if a woman was Prime Minister?

Of course, things would be different. There would be a lot more focus on equal opportunities and gender equality.

Why do you think a woman has not been chosen till date?

Sadly, that is because we live in a male dominated society.

Alok Thapa, Actor

He plays the character of Sushan, Prime Minister Aasha’s press adviser.

How do you associate with your character in Singha Durbar?

My previous stints with national dailies definitely helped me relate to my character. I play the role of a journalist/ blogger who’s out there sifting through dirt in search of the truth.

Are there any women in Nepal today, who could be Prime Minister ?

As of now, NO! I don’t want to pick a random name for the sake of it. But with more women taking their places in elected offices, and young people showing interest in public affairs, it’s a proposition that cannot be entirely ruled out.

Do serials like these help empower women in the county?

Media can be a powerful tool to inspire, equip and inform. The idea of a female led government might sound far-fetched, but it is not impossible. As someone once said, “You can’t be what you can’t see”, and it is true for all of us.
