THE WORLD THIS WEEK
Racing into record books :
A British-built car has broken the speed record for a vehicle with a diesel engine. The car — JCB Dieselmax — raced to an average speed of 529km per hour in the US state of Utah. The vehicle, driven by RAF Wing Commander Andy Green, was built in Staffordshire. It broke the previous record of 380 km per hour set in 1973. “This is British engineering at its absolute best. We now have the fastest diesel in the world,” said the driver. The record has been confirmed by international judges, but the team is hoping to better it with further attempts.
