THE WORLD THIS WEEK: Get the donkeys back

People who live in a small village are trying to raise money to buy a donkey — not to keep as a pet, but to help them carry their shopping. Some of the streets in Chalford, near Stroud, are so steep and narrow that residents can’t get their cars near their houses. Instead, they have to carry their heavy bags about 100 metres up hilly slopes. Donkeys used to deliver bread and coal to the area years ago and now people are hoping they can make a comeback. Dave Andrews said the village in Gloucestershire was backing the campaign to “bring back the Chalford Donkey”.
