THE WORLD THIS WEEK: Super-fastest jet

Scientists have designed a hypersonic plane which could take people for day trips to the other side of the world. Travelling at speeds of almost 4,000mph, the aircraft would make the trip from Europe to Australia in under five hours. Measuring 143 metres long, it would be twice the size of the biggest jumbo jets, and would carry 300 passengers. But the planes won’t be taking to the skies for 25 years, and tickets will cost around £3,500.

The A2 would be TWICE the size of a jumbo jet. The A2 aeroplane was designed by a company in Oxfordshire called Reaction Engines.
