The year that was 2004: Boomtime for fantasy, aliens, history

Troy:

In ancient Greece, the passion of two of literature’s most notorious lovers, Paris, prince of Troy (Orlando Bloom) and Helen (Diane Kruger), queen of Sparta, ignites a war that will devastate a civilisation. One man alone stands as the key to victory, or defeat over Troy — Achilles (Brad Pitt), believed to be the greatest warrior alive. Achilles has allegiance to nothing and no one, save his own glory. It is his insatiable hunger for eternal renown that leads him to attack the gates of Troy under Agamemnon’s banner — but it will be love that ultimately decides his fate. Two worlds will go to war for honour and power. A nation will burn for love.

The Last Samurai:

Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is a man adrift. In the years since the Civil War pragmatism has replaced courage, self-interest has taken the place of sacrifice and honour —especially out West where his role in the Indian Campaigns ended in disillusionment and sorrow.

A universe away, another soldier — Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) — sees his way of life about to disintegrate. He is the last leader of the venerated Samurais. The paths of these two warriors converge when the young emperor of Japan, wooed by American interests hires Algren to train Japan’s first modern, conscript army.

Alien vs Predator:

An incredible and horrific adventure begins when billionaire industrialist Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) gathers an international team of scientists led by environmentalist Alexa “Lex” Woods (Sanaa Lathan), to investigate a mysterious “heat bloom” emanating from deep under Antarctica.

What they witness 2,000 ft below the frozen surface terrifies them. Predators have been keeping alive a captive Alien queen who lays eggs at 100-year intervals. Young Predator warriors are tested by fighting the Alien offspring. The team stumbles into the middle of an incredible rite of passage — and a war between Aliens and Predators.

The Incredibles:

Bob Paar used to be one of the world’s greatest superheroes (known as “Mr Incredible”), saving lives and fighting evil on a daily basis. Fifteen years later, Bob and his wife (a former superhero in her own right) have retreated to the suburbs to live normal lives with their three kids. Itching to get back into action, Bob gets his chance when a mysterious communication summons him to a remote island for a top-secret assignment.

Spiderman 2:

Tobey Maguire returns as the mild-mannered Peter Parker, who is juggling the delicate balance of his dual life as a college student and a superhuman crime fighter. Life becomes even more complicated when he confronts a new nemesis, the brilliant Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), reincarnated as the maniacal and multi-tentacled “Doc Ock.”
