Blood stained stairs and rooms, bullets scattered all over — these are the only remains of chaos after the encounter at Lokhandwala as being reported by Meeta Mattoo (Dia Mirza). The movie begins with a shootout that place at Lokhandwala Complex in the year 1991.

The story revolves around the waging war between ATS (Anti-terrorist Squad) led by ACP Aftab Ahmad Khan (Sanjay Dutt), along with Inspector Kaviraj Patil (Suniel Shetty) and Constable Javed Shaikh (Arbaaz Khan), and the underworld group led by Maya (Vivek Oberoi). It tells the story of the final encounter between the five underworld men and 286 men from the police force. The story unfolds as it is narrated to Dingra (Amitabh Bachachan), the police officer’s lawyer.

His fearless nature sees Maya move rapidly up the ladder and become an asset to the underworld Bhai of Mumbai, the chief person handling his jobs. The taste of power overtakes him, and with his gang members Dilip Bhuwa (Tusshar Kapoor), RC (Shabbir Ahluwalia), Fatim (Rohit Roy) and Doubling (Aditya Lakhia), they take things in their own hands after being provoked by Aai (Amrita Singh).

Director Apoorva Lakhia’s portrayal of the dark world that exists within the tinsel city of which denizens are unaware of, the atrocities and life behind this darkness, have been captured in its true sense. The encounter is full of bloodshed (as expected) and violence, which has been shown in a very appaling manner. It does not fail to send a shiver down your spine.

The music complements the scenes adding intensity to this fast-paced movie. The sequences change interestingly as the scenes constantly revolve from one to the other moving seamlessly.

Sanjay Dutt has given a remarkable performance. The big star cast certainly does not disappoint as the actors have done justice to their roles. Another commendable actor is Amrita Singh.

However, Tusshar Kapoor’s childish face looks a bit too unfitting for his role as a goon, and fails to bring out the meanness the role deserves.

The female leads Neha Dhupia and Aarti Chhabria don’t have much to offer, and Chhabria is

limited to a few songs which are forgettable. For Abhihek Bachchan’s fans, his cameo appearance will be a disappointment.

All said and done, Shootout... is worth a watch.
