An actor who can not only do stunts and dance with grace but can also emote with equal ease, a supporting cast that consists of quality actors like Reema Lagoo, Sharat Saxena, Darshan Jariwala and an interesting storyline, Superstar has it all, but still it doesn’t quite leave a mark. Rohit Jugraj has proven how weak direction can actually make a good story into a mediocre movie.
Superstar is the story of a junior artiste Kunal Mehra (Kunal Khemu) who dreams to be big in Bollywood. Although his father doesn’t approve of his work he has a very encouraging mother and a group of supporting friends. His dream gets shattered when a producer launches his son, Karan Saxena (Kunal Khemu again) who looks exactly like Kunal. However, Karan is least interested in acting and also cannot act. So, the producer brings in Kunal who starts working in the place of Karan. In the process Karan befriends Kunal and his other friends. The story takes a turn when Karan and Kunal meet an accident in which one of them dies.
The performance is the strong point of this movie as it has a line up of excellent actors. Kunal Khemu has already proven his acting skills and with this movie he has shown that as an actor he is a complete package. Reema Lagoo and Sharat Saxena, who play Kunal’s parents, have delivered excellent performances, especially during the emotional seque-nces. Though not as powerful as in Halla Bol, Darshan Jariwala’s performance in this movie is noticeable.
The major setback for this movie (in addition to direction) is its screenplay and cinematography. At some scenes the camera work is so poor that you wonder how did the director okayed those shots. In terms of screenplay, the flow of the story has been taken too lightly and thus fails to generate interest. Music by Shamir Tandon is hardly worth humming except for Mann Tu Talbat.
One can’t expect something exceptional from Superstar.
