Top of the world
Kathmandu
This year two Nepali students topped the A-level examinations in the world. The A-levels are conducted by University of Cambridge International Examination (CIE).
Both of them had given their exam from Rato Bangala School. Pranaya SJB Rana scored the highest in Psychology, while Prakriti Mishra scored the highest in Sociology. Prakriti also scored the highest in Biology in Nepal.
Here’s what they had to say about their individual achievements, future plans
Prakriti’s feelings
It was very unexpected. It certainly felt great as I had never thought this would happen, especially since I was competing with the world.
Her strengths
I think what really helped me was that if I had any doubts I would immediately put forth my queries to my teachers. That helped me understand everything very clearly. The discussions we had in class also gave me a lot of confidence. I was not into memorising or revising much. It was also the immense support and guidance given by my parents and teachers that helped me a lot in achieving this.
Why A-levels
I chose A-levels as I was not very keen on taking the other courses available as they do not allow you to express yourself as those are mostly based on memorising. A-levels helps one to broaden one’s mind and prepares you for the future. It is also credible worldwide and a good platform.
Future plans
I am applying to colleges in the US. I have not decided which subject I will be studying, but I am interested in Journalism.
Pranaya’s feelings
I was surprised and it certainly was a good thing. But after the initial excitement things are back to normal.
His strengths
I was very interested in Psychology. Besides the prescribed course books, I did a lot of research work and read a lot of extra materials. I was genuinely interested to know answers to questions as to why this or that happened and really worked on finding the answers. I was into understanding the concepts rather than memorising them.
Why A levels
You have more choices to study whatever subjects you like, unlike the other courses where its either Science, Commerce or Arts. You have a wider range to choose from.
Future plans
I am applying to colleges in US. I had not thought of studying Psychology but since the results were so good I am considering seriously continuing in that line. Personally, I am also interested in Journalism.
