Nairob: The unlikely couple of a baby hippo and a 130-year-old tortoise were still together, a year after the hippo was separated from its family by the tsun-ami. The relationship between Owen, two-year-old hippopotamus, and Mzee, the tortoise, surprised conservation workers. Owen was washed into the ocean by tsunami waves. Residents of Malindi took him to the Haller Park sanctuary, where he met Mzee and adopted him as a surrogate parent. The tortoise at first resisted. But Owen kept following him and Mzee relented. As the bond grew, the tortoise returned signs of affection. They are now inseparable.
