KATHMANDU, JUNE 25

While monsoon activity is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to eastern and central parts of the country, intense heatwave conditions will likely persist in several western Tarai districts, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

The department said the monsoon currently covers all areas of Koshi, Madhesh and Bagmati provinces, parts of Gandaki Province and eastern areas of Lumbini Province. The rest of the country remains under partial influence of westerly and local winds.

Generally cloudy conditions are forecast for the hilly and Himalayan regions, Madhesh Province and the Tarai districts of Koshi Province. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at several places in the hills and mountains, while parts of Koshi and Madhesh provinces may also witness moderate rainfall and thunderstorms.

Cities including Biratnagar, Dharan, Dhankuta, Okhaldhunga, Pokhara and Taplejung are expected to receive moderate rain with thundershowers. Kathmandu Valley is likely to see light rain and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Despite the spread of monsoon activity, heatwave conditions are expected to continue in parts of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces. Dhangadhi and Nepalgunj are forecast to experience heatwave conditions, with temperatures reaching up to 40 and 41 degrees Celsius respectively.

Hot day conditions are also likely in Bhairahawa, Birendranagar, Simara and Ghorahi, where temperatures are expected to remain above 34 degrees Celsius.

For tonight, the department has forecast generally cloudy conditions over the hilly and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, along with Madhesh Province and the Tarai districts of Koshi. Moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are likely at a few places in these areas, while most Tarai districts of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces are expected to remain mainly fair.

Meteorologists have advised people in heatwave-affected areas to take necessary precautions against extreme temperatures, while residents in monsoon-affected regions have been urged to remain alert to possible thunderstorms and localized heavy rainfall.
