KATHMANDU, JUNE 19

The country is set to experience a sharp weather contrast today, with moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms forecast in eastern Nepal, while heatwave conditions are expected to persist across parts of the western Tarai.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Koshi Province and the hilly and Himalayan regions of Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces will remain generally cloudy. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in several hilly and mountainous areas, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in parts of Koshi Province.

The department has also warned of possible thunderstorms in the Tarai of Koshi Province and isolated areas of Madhesh Province.

Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are likely in the Tarai districts of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces, with temperatures expected to reach up to 41 degrees Celsius in Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa and Dhangadi. Hot day conditions are also forecast for parts of Bagmati and Gandaki Tarai.

Kathmandu Valley is expected to receive light rain and thunderstorms, with daytime temperatures ranging between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius. Pokhara and several eastern hill districts, including Dhankuta, Okhaldhunga and Taplejung, are likely to witness moderate rainfall and thundershowers.

Meteorologists said the current weather pattern is being influenced by a western trough in the upper atmosphere, combined with local and easterly winds.

The department has advised residents in areas vulnerable to heavy rain and thunderstorms to remain cautious, while people in the heatwave-affected Tarai districts have been urged to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and stay adequately hydrated.
