"Passion drives me"
Her transformation from the girl next door to a charismatic diva was something Alina Basnet had never imagined possible. The charming damsel has come a long way in her career. In conversation with TGIF, the pretty lady talks about her journey into the modelling world.
Hottie you’d like to get naughty with?
Jon Kortajarena.
Have you ever made a fashion faux pas?
Yes, I came out once wearing an oversized pair of sunglasses but I took it off real soon.
What are the three things we don’t know about you?
I completed my schooling from Janakpur, I was raised by a single mom and I check out girls more often than boys.
Most embarrassing moment
Kissing my friend’s brother while I was drunk!
Clothes you are comfortable in?
As a model, I’ve learnt to be comfortable in what I wear.
Don’t leave home without?
Mobile, lip balm, moisturiser, face mirror and wet wipes.
When did you realise that modelling was something you were good at?
It was during one of the shoots for ‘The Little Mermaid’ which was also published in TGIF. The feedback I got made me realise that modelling was the right choice for me.
What was your first professional modelling gig? What was the best part of the experience?
My first modelling assignment was a photo shoot which didn’t turn out well but I learned the basics of modelling from it. The best part was my transformation from the girl next door to a diva!
How easy/ difficult is it to make friends in the modelling world?
Generally speaking, like-minded people always end up being friends. Therefore, being around people with similar passion makes it easier to make friends.
If you weren’t a model what would you be?
An entrepreneur since I am a student of business studies.
Fashion photography is all about the image, the end product. But what, for you, is the most enjoyable part of it?
Looking at the finished product gives me immense satisfaction but the real joy is in the effort you put in every single moment for that perfect final shot. The time spent with the crew during long hours of shooting is a breeding ground for memories to be made. The team, the location, props and getting transformed from an individual into a designer’s muse and makeup canvas excites me a lot.
For an introvert like me, Envogue 2014 was no less a rollercoaster ride. I was intimidated at the beginning but our mentor Bipen Gurung was inspiring. Although I couldn’t do as well as I had expected it was a learning experience for me.
Any upcoming projects?
There are some interesting shoots that I am working on like High Fashion, a new concept in fashion photography. I am super excited about it and I hope people will like it.
What was the scariest thing you’ve ever been asked to do on a photo shoot?
It was during one of the shoots where I had to pose in a muddy pit. Thank God it wasn’t a quicksand pit!
Any advice for newcomers?
Modelling is much more than camera, makeup and pretty outfits. It is about being able to communicate the ideas of the designers, makeup artists and photographers to the audience. If you think you can do it and are passionate about it, go for it!
