The death toll from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Chitwan district has climbed to six since mid-July, according to the District Health Office.

Of the deceased, two were from Bharatpur Metropolitan City, two from Rapti Municipality, one from Khairahani, and one from Kalika Municipality. The latest fatality was a woman from Khairahani-4, said vector control officer Ram KC.

So far, 17 infections - 10 women and seven men - have been reported in the district. Three of the patients are under 15 years of age, five are between 15 and 60, and nine are above 60. Fifteen of the infected individuals had not been vaccinated, KC said.

Health officials said the disease, spread through the bite of infected female Culex mosquitoes, remains a seasonal concern in the district. These mosquitoes breed in paddy fields and prefer outdoor environments, especially during dusk and dawn.
