Chitwan, October 9
The 30th World Egg Day celebrations concluded in Chitwan today with school nutrition awareness programmes, a five-kilometre Egg Walk and an industry workshop. Organized by the Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association with support from the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) and U.S. Soy, the celebration brought together students, community members, poultry stakeholders and government representatives to promote egg and protein awareness.
The activities combined public nutrition education with discussion of the challenges and opportunities facing Nepal's egg industry. School outreach formed a major part of the celebration, followed by a community walk and a workshop on World Egg Day.
From October 1 to 8, school awareness programmes reached around 100 schools and educated approximately 5,000 students about the importance of eggs and protein in daily diets. The sessions focused on helping students understand the nutritional value of eggs and the role of protein in growth, development and balanced nutrition.
The Nepal Veterinary Association (NVA), Bagmati Province, provided technical support for the school programmes. Eggs were distributed at all participating schools, connecting nutrition education with practical encouragement to include nutritious foods in everyday meals.
On the morning of October 9, more than 500 people joined a five-kilometre Egg Walk. Accompanied by music, the walk created a lively atmosphere and brought community members together around the shared message of better nutrition. It also helped extend the celebration's awareness activities beyond schools to the wider public.
An evening workshop brought together poultry stakeholders and invited guests to discuss egg production, consumption and the industry's future.
Senior nutritionist Dr. Dinesh Gautam delivered a presentation titled "Status of Egg Production and Consumption: Trends and Future Outlook," addressing the current situation and future prospects of the egg sector.
The panel discussion featured experts including senior physician Dr. Bhojraj Adhikari, Dr. Dinesh Gautam, Binod Pokharel, Rajan Pokhrel and Dr. Ram Nandan Tiwari.
Moderated by USSEC Nepal chief Dr. Ashesh Bhattarai, the discussion provided a platform to connect perspectives on nutrition, public awareness, poultry production and policy.
Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association President Binod Pokharel chaired the programme, while government joint secretary Dr. Ram Nandan Tiwari attended as the chief guest. Chief District Officer of Chitwan Ganesh Aryal attended as the special guest.
During the event, Umesh Chandra Sapkota, President of Nepal Feed Industry Association, urged the government to address concerns of the poultry farmers.
In his welcome remarks, Pokharel highlighted challenges facing the wider poultry sector and emphasized the importance of appropriate policies in addressing industry concerns. He stressed the need for a supportive policy environment to help resolve problems and strengthen the sector's long-term development.
The celebration linked school education, community engagement and industry dialogue. By reaching approximately 5,000 students and drawing more than 500 participants to the Egg Walk, the activities extended egg and protein awareness across different sections of the community, while the workshop provided a forum to discuss the future of Nepal's poultry industry.
