13 hurt as car runs over pedestrians

Kathmandu, November 29

A private car swerved onto the pavement near the bus stand in front of Nepal Airlines Corporation at New Road injuring 13  people, including a foreigner.

Three persons, including Ganga Maya Rai, 20, of Kapan; Rudra Man Pati of Nepalgunj; and  Kecshia Seraspe, 25, of the Philippines  were critically injured in the accident. All the injured are undergoing treatment at National Trauma Centre.

The car (Ba 18 Cha 4873) was being driven by owner Raj Poudyel of Pepsicola.  According to police, the driver said he had applied the brakes but could not stop the car.

Security guards at the NAC said the driver had parked his car at the NAC parking lot and had started his vehicle to pick up his

wife and sister-in-law, who were waiting at the gate of NAC.

Security guards also said that the driver stopped his car briefly at the gate but without letting his wife and sister-in-law get into the car. DSP Tekunanda Iwa Limbu of Metropolitan Police Circle, New Road, however, said the driver had not stopped at the NAC gate, but drove the car onto the pavement.
