3-day educational strike called

Kathmandu, December 27:

The Council House of Tamu Students Nepal has called a three-day educational strike from December 30 when the Tamu (Gurung) community celebrates its biggest festival Lhosar.

The strike, however, is expected to have a little impact on education sector, as the most of the educational institutions remain closed due to winter vacation during the Lhosar time.

According to Nar Bahadur Tamu, president of the council, the strike was a protest demanding public holidays during the three days of Lhosar.

Gurung students and various Tamu organisations have been demanding the government to declare the three days during the Lhosar as public holidays since long but the government has remained indifferent towards their demand, he said.

He accused the government of practicing cultural discrimination by providing holidays only on Hindu festivals.

He said the indigenous nationalities have not yet been able to enjoy the equality guaranteed by the interim constitution.
