54-year-old woman gives birth to twins

Kathmandu, February 11

A 54-year-old woman from Dillibazar, Kathmandu, gave birth to twins at Vayodha Hospital yesterday four years after  menopause.

The woman had married a 34-year-old man eight years ago. She wanted to conceive after her marriage, but could not for a long time.

“Although I wanted to have a baby, I was in doubt because of my age. So I consulted doctors and came to know that with in-vitro fertilisation it was possible for me to conceive,” she said. “I am so happy to have delivered twins, a baby boy and a girl.”

She did not marry anyone till the age of 47, but she fell in love with a businessman when she was 48. Due to her age, it was difficult for her to conceive and thus she consulted Dr Nutan Sharma, an IVF expert.

“When she came to my IVF centre for the first time, I said she could have a baby through IVF, and we started the process straight away,” said Dr Sharma. “We conducted some tests and found she had fibroid in her uterus. At first we removed the fibroid and started her menstruation through medication. It took almost two months and then she got pregnant through IVF,” shared Dr Sharma. “This is very rare and the first case in Nepal,” she added. Due to high blood pressure, we had to conduct C-section and take out the twins before the expected delivery date, she said.

Both the mother and the newborns are safe. The boy has been kept in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Vayodha, while the baby girl has been sent to Norvic International Hospital for further treatment.
