Absconding human trafficking convict held after 18 years

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police’s Central Bureau of Investigation has recently arrested an absconding human trafficking convict, who had been on the run for 18 years, from Kathmandu.

The arrestee has been identified as Bijaya Kumar Tamang aka Bijaya Lama (44) of Samundradevi -8 in Nuwakot.

Tamang was nabbed from Samakhusi in the Capital on Tuesday and presented before the Kathmandu District Court for execution of the sentence today.

Meanwhile, Tamang has been sent to Central Jail in Sundhara on the same day to serve his sentence.

Tamang was sentenced to a 10-year imprisonment by the Court on January 22, 2002.

Tamang, among other defendants, was convicted of selling a woman to a brothel in Mumbai in India although she had agreed  to accompany them to New Delhi  to purchase clothes .

The valiant woman, however, had managed to flee the brothel after realising that she had been trafficked.

She had come to Nepal and complained the case to the police.
