Absconding septuagenarian rape convict nabbed
KATHMANDU: A team deployed from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has nabbed an absconding rape convict from his residence at Sinamangal, Kathmandu on Wednesday.
The 72-year-old Puspa Lal Upreti (also known as Bharat Sharma) was slapped with eight-year jail sentence by the Kathmandu District Court for repeatedly raping his 13-year old domestic worker, on November 09, 2014, CIB informed.
The Court had also ordered the convict to pay Rs 100,000 to the victim as compensation.
Upreti was arrested acting on a case filed by Maiti Nepal staffer Sami Rai. The victim was studying in the seventh grade at the time of the trial.
The case had come into limelight when the victim informed her class teacher that she could not do well in the exam because of the repeated offence as well as death threats in case of revelation of the crime, by her employer.
According to the victim, she was abused since 2010/11 till August 04, 2012 in absence of other family members.
Upreti was presented before the Court to implement the previous sentence. The Court has sent him to the Dillibazaar Jail.
