Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has underlined the need for conservation of lingual and cultural diversity of the country.

Inaugurating the 'first international mother-language journalism conference' on the occasion of the centennial of journalism in mother language in Nepal, the former President viewed the lingual and cultural diversity also establishes links among generations. "The journalism in mother language helps raise the voice of marginalized communities," she said adding that local journalists must be aware of local context and developments.

The local journalists using mother tongue can produce more authentic information about particular communities, according to her.

"Democracy and mass communications have inseparable relations. Responsible journalism, informed citizenry and accountable governments are complementary to democracy" Bhandari reminded, urging the journalists to write accurate and balanced news stories.

The conference is attended by the journalists from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Japan and Sri Lanka. The event is attended distantly via virtual medium.
