Additional 17,000 civil servants required at local levels

Kathmandu, June 7

The government is in need of  at least 57,000 civil servants to run the local level administration.

There are 753 local levels under the seven provinces and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration says there are only 40,000 public servants in the field now.

The Organisation and Management Survey conducted by the ministry shows that an additional 17,000 public servants are needed at the local levels. Services have been affected due to lack of adequate number of civil servants at the local levels.

“We are in the process of collecting data on the number of civil servants required at the local levels. We will manage civil servants for the local levels after collection of data from the federal, provincial and local governments,” said Spokesperson for the MoFAGA Suresh Adhikari.

Adhikari said around 7,000 technical new public servants are required. “After the final ONM report we will come out with enrolment numbers,” he said.

Adhikari said there were around 20,000 to 24,000 civil servants deployed for administrative work in the seven provinces.

The ministry has been conducting a survey on the departments required in the provinces. “We are yet to finalise the number of departments required in the provinces,” he said.
