ANNISU-R to agitate for democratic republic

Kathmandu, May 9:

The All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (Revolutionary) has decided to launch a three-phase movement against “the efforts of political parties to thwart the formation of a democratic republic.”

The third full session of the ANNISU-R, which concluded here yesterday, made a decision to this effect. Speaking at a press conference at the Bagbazaar-based office of the ANNISU-R today, Lekhnath Neupane, the ANNISU-R president, announced that the student body will organise a nationalist movement in three phases.

“Seminars and interactions will be organised in the first phase. Memoranda will be submitted to the US and Indian embassies in the second phase. An east-west border march campaign will be organised in the third phase,” he said.

The ANNISU-R has formed a three-member talks team headed by its general secretary Himal Sharma to begin talks with Left-aligned student organisations and form a Republican Students’ Front.

“With an aim to put pressure on the parliament to declare a republic, the ANNISU-R has launched a signature campaign,” he said.
