ANNISU-R urges govt to address Dr KC’s demands

Kathmandu, July 13

Expressing solidarity with Dr Govinda KC’s fast-unto-death protest, All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union-Revolutionary today urged the government to address his demands and save his life.

Issuing a press statement here today, Sewanta Raj Bhandari, coordinator, ANNISU-R, said Dr KC had been staging hunger strike to end the ill practices in the medical education sector.

Dr KC, an orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, had begun his eighth fast-unto-death on July 10, demanding reforms in the medical education sector.

“The hospital administration has not been providing even minimum medical facilities to Dr KC, who is staging hunger strike with a good intention,” the statement read.

Dr KC has put forth a four-point demand, including impeachment of Chief Commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Lokman Singh Karki.

Amendment to the draft of the Medical Education Act with provisions for at least a medical college in all the provinces, free education in all government run medical colleges, withdrawal of the bill on establishing a separate medical academy are among the other demands of Dr KC.

He has also demanded that no new medical college be granted university affiliation for the next 10 years.
