Kathmandu, July 1

SAARC Arbitration Council in collaboration with Nepal Council of Arbitration recently held a workshop on ‘The role of Arbitrators in Fostering Efficient Resolution of Disputes’ with a focus on Nepal.

Delegates from business community, legal practitioners, arbitrators and academics attended the workshop. SARCO is an inter-governmental body mandated to provide legal framework and forum within the SAARC region for fair and efficient settlement of commercial, industrial, trade, banking, investment and such other disputes as referred by the member states.

Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee appreciated the efforts made by SARCO for settlement of disputes in the SAARC region.

Similarly, Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang addressing the inaugural session said that a platform like SARCO was immensely helpful in formulating laws related to dispute settlement.

SARCO Director General Zahidullah Jalai highlighted the importance of the organisation as an inter-governmental institution.

Chairman of Nepal Council of Arbitration Birendra Deoja spoke about the prospect for both institutions to organise similar joint events in future. SARCO aims to establish an alternative dispute resolution forum, which would act on behalf of governments of SAARC member countries.
