KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 17

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu celebrated Victory Day 2025 with solemnity and festivity at its premises on Monday, marking the historic victory of Bangladesh's Liberation War of 1971.

The programme was attended by SAARC Secretary General Ambassador Md Golam Sarwar, Bangladeshi officials serving at the SAARC Secretariat, officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines' Nepal office, members of the Bangladeshi community in Nepal, Nepali dignitaries and businesspersons, as well as players and officials of the visiting Bangladeshi women's football club, Nasrin Sports Academy.

The celebration began with the hoisting of the national flag and the playing of the national anthem, followed by a one-minute silence in remembrance of the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and the July–August 2024 mass uprising. Special prayers were offered for the departed souls, and messages from the President, Chief Adviser and Adviser for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh were read out.

Cultural performances by students from a local art school in Kathmandu, featuring Bangla and Nepali dances and songs, were a key highlight of the event. Renowned Nepali vocalist Saraswati Khatri of Sur Sudha Music Group also presented Bangla and Nepali songs.

Addressing the gathering, SAARC Secretary General Ambassador Golam Sarwar underscored the significance of Victory Day and urged people to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War. He also highlighted the importance of collective efforts to realise the aspirations emerging from the July–August mass uprising for a discrimination-free and inclusive Bangladesh.

In his concluding remarks, Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Md Shafiqur Rahman paid tribute to the martyrs and wounded freedom fighters of the 1971 Liberation War and the martyrs of the July mass uprising. He said the recent uprising has opened a renewed path toward fulfilling the unaccomplished ideals of the Liberation War, envisioning a fair, just, corruption-free and inclusive "Bangladesh 2.0."

The programme concluded with a luncheon hosted in honour of the guests.
