Bharatpur mayoral candidate’s son held

Kathmandu, August 2

Police today arrested Nirab Gyawali, son of CPN-UML’s mayoral candidate for Bharatpur Metropolitan City, for allegedly posting defamatory remarks on Facebook against Renu Dahal, the CPN-Maoist Centre’s mayoral candidate for BMC.

A team of Metropolitan Police Crime Division held him from Putalisadak in response to a complaint lodged at District Police Office, Chitwan, against Nirab on Friday.

Though Nirab made ‘objectionable’ remarks on the social networking site on May 29, Dahal’s husband Anil Kumar Pathak filed an FIR against him late. Police, however, refused to disclose the contents of the Facebook post.

Nirab had posted ‘defamatory remarks’ against Dahal in the context of ballot papers torn by Maoist representatives in the vote counting station.

MPCD handles cases of cyber crime, as Kathmandu District Court is the only court in Nepal to adjudicate such cases.

MPCD stated that it had launched an investigation against Nirab Gyawali under the Electronic Transactions Act.
