Body to address teachers’ woes

Kathmandu, April 20:

Minister for Education and Sports Pradip Nepal today said that a committee will be formed at the earliest to address the demands put forth by the Association of Teachers of Higher Secondary Schools.

The committee will be formed under the coordination of the Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) and will have representation of the education ministry, he said.

The assurance came at a meeting with representatives of the association. Demanding that their seven-point demand be met, members of the association were staging an hour-long sit-in protest in front of the ministry today.

Among other things, the agitating teachers of private schools have been seeking salaries on a par with their counterparts in government schools. The teachers had announced a series of protest programmes from April 18. Laba Prasad Tripathee, spokesperson for the Education Ministry, said that the government will form the committee by Monday to address the teachers’ demands.
