KATHMANDU, JULY 22
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stated that an understanding was reached during high-level visits between the Prime Ministers of Nepal and India to resolve border issues through established diplomatic mechanisms.
Responding to lawmakers during the 'Direct Question Hour with the Prime Minister' in the House of Representatives, PM Oli reaffirmed Nepal's clear and determined stance on its international border.
He highlighted that the new political map of Nepal, adopted through the second amendment to the Constitution on June 18, 2020, has been included in Schedule 3 of the Constitution.
PM Oli emphasized the unprecedented national consensus on the border issue and asserted that territories such as Limpiyadhura, Kalapani, and Lipulek, east of the Kali (Mahakali) River, belong to Nepal as per the Sugauli Treaty of 1816.
He noted that border discussions also took place during the Seventh Meeting of the Nepal-India Joint Commission on January 4, 2024, with commitments to finalize the remaining sections of the border.
The PM informed the House that the Nepal-India Border Working Group continues its technical work, including the construction, restoration, and repair of border pillars, and preparing details of no-man's land and cross-holdings. Efforts are ongoing to resume the Joint Working Group meetings at a mutually convenient time.
PM Oli reiterated Nepal's consistent stance to resolve border issues through diplomatic channels and on the basis of the Sugauli Treaty, various maps, historical facts, and evidence. He assured active initiatives in this regard.
The Prime Minister also mentioned the establishment of an Armed Police Force Nepal company at Chhangru in Darchula, along with five new Border Outposts (BOPs) towards India and one towards China.
Addressing corruption, PM Oli identified it as a major hurdle to good governance and development, stating its elimination as a top priority.
He affirmed the government's commitment to combat corruption, including issues related to gold smuggling, cooperative fraud, and the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, pledging to uphold good governance and protect national interests. PM Oli expressed determination to bring perpetrators to justice, noting that many cases are under judicial consideration.
