KATHMANDU, JANUARY 6

A Buddha Air flight made a VOR-assisted emergency landing at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) today after experiencing mechanical issues in-flight. The flight had departed earlier for Chandargadi Airport in Bhadrapur, Jhapa, carrying 72 passengers and four crew members, including the pilots.

The flight, BHA 953, declared a full emergency and landed safely at 11:15 AM, according to the TIA Civil Aviation Office.

The plane had traveled 43 nautical miles east of Kathmandu when the plane encounctered a flameout in its left engine, forcing it to operate on a single engine. Following the emergency declaration, the aircraft returned to TIA, executing a VOR approach from the Guras Point.

VOR is a navigational system that provides precise directional guidance by transmitting radio signals. It serves as a backup when GPS is unavailable or when airports lack Instrument Landing System (ILS) capabilities. VOR stations function like radio lighthouses, emitting signals that aircraft receivers use to determine the plane's exact position relative to the station.
