Call for participatory waste management act

Kathmandu, November 1:

Environment experts today said that the Waste Management Act should adopt a participatory, decentralised and integrated approach.

“The Waste Management Act should adopt a participatory, decentralised and integrated approach. Only such an act can ensure sustainable management of garbage,” said an environment expert Bhushan Tuladhar. Addressing a discussion on the proposed draft of the Garbage Management Act 2007, organised by the Nepal Federation of Environmental Journalists, Tuladhar demanded that stakeholders be included in the process of drafting the act. “The proposed draft has not talked about the reuse of garbage,” he said, adding that the draft is also not clear on the role of the private sector.

KMC legal officer Basanta Acharya said the draft act has not envisaged any authority to local bodies in waste management.

NEFEJ chairman Sahaj Man Shrestha said time has come to warn administrative officers not to make changes in the acts as per their wish.
