Call to formulate laws to check domestic violence
Kathmandu, May 1:
Women rights activists today urged the government to promulgate laws to control domestic violence in the country.
Speaking at a corner meeting at the Maitighar Mandala here, advocate Rup Narayan Shrestha said though the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has prepared a draft of the bill, the government is yet produce it in the parliament.
Women rights activist Namrata Sharma called the civil society to put pressure on the government to enact laws against domestic violence.
Uma Tamang of the Maiti Nepal said the victims of domestic violence have not got justice due to lack of laws.
Jasmin Sharma, a victim of domestic violence, called to treat the offence as a serious crime and punish the perpetrators as murderers. President of Nepal Law Campus Students’ Union, Nabaraj Thapaliya, said domestic violence cannot be checked unless the government makes stringent laws.
